When I was in school taking an advertising course, one story we were told to convince us that advertising worked was about the advertising for soap. There was a point when the makers of soap in England got together and all agreed to stop advertising soap because they figured everyone needed soap so why were they all wasting their money on buying ads. So, all the soap manufacturers stop advertising soap. What happened? The sales of soap dropped across the board. Someone broke the agreement and soap advertising continued, but it proved that the advertising did influence how much soap people used and ultimately bought.

Of course it works. Have you ever heard of McDonalds, Coca-Cola? That's advertising.
It works crazy-well on parents because our kids tell us about new toys, games, and movies everyday that they saw on TV.
I've gone out and bought things I saw on TV the same day as seeing the ad, several times. It's not necessarily that I didn't know the product existed before, but the ad made me want it right then.

Yes, advertising include product placement and packaging. Commericials help but when you walk through a shop or see someone else using it, the other parts of advertising come in to play.

Sure it does, alot of people want to be directed as far as where to go and what to buy. They think because an ad says something is great it must be true.

Oh, it works.
When we were in college we were laughing about this new beer ad we always saw on TV, and in walks our roommate with a 6-pack of the crap we had just been making fun of. It stunk, too.
