The SACat database, which forms part of the SabiCat service, is a cooperative national catalogue of library collections in Southern Africa, including books, journal titles, conference proceedings, standards and technical reports.
What is SACat?
The SACat is a national union catalogue, reflecting the stock of libraries in Southern Africa. This database contains bibliographic information for more than 3,8 million records for books, periodicals, audio-visual and other information material.
The SACat database grows daily through the copy cataloguing efforts of Sabinet cataloguing clients, using OCLC’s WorldCat as basis. New records are created on WorldCat and exported interactively into the SACat for local use.
South Africa's historic national catalogues, namely Periodicals in Southern African Libraries (PISAL) and the Joint Catalogue of Monographs (JC), have been integrated into the SACat.
With its more than 7 million location listings (holdings), SACat is invaluable in determining the location of information sources in Southern Africa.
The SACat actively supports the acquisition and cataloguing of new additions in libraries.
It also supports resource sharing in libraries, facilitating the borrowing of books and forwarding of copies of periodical articles between libraries.
