Where are all the protest songs?
I turned 18 in 1969....got my draft card on my 18th birthday.
Prime cannon fodder.
Protest songs out the wazoo....
some grim ...like Bob Dylans "Masters of War"

Masters of War...BOB DYLAN circa 1963Come you masters of war
You that build all the guns
You that build the death planes
You that build the big bombs
You that hide behind walls
You that hide behind desks
I just want you to know
I can see through your masks

You that never done nothin'
But build to destroy
You play with my world
Like it's your little toy
You put a gun in my hand
And you hide from my eyes
And you turn and run farther
When the fast bullets fly

Like Judas of old
You lie and deceive
A world war can be won
You want me to believe
But I see through your eyes
And I see through your brain
Like I see through the water
That runs down my drain

You fasten the triggers
For the others to fire
Then you set back and watch
When the death count gets higher
You hide in your mansion
As young people's blood
Flows out of their bodies
And is buried in the mud

You've thrown the worst fear
That can ever be hurled
Fear to bring children
Into the world
For threatening my baby
Unborn and unnamed
You ain't worth the blood
That runs in your veins

How much do I know
To talk out of turn
You might say that I'm young
You might say I'm unlearned
But there's one thing I know
Though I'm younger than you
Even Jesus would never
Forgive what you do

Let me ask you one question
Is your money that good
Will it buy you forgiveness
Do you think that it could
I think you will find
When your death takes its toll
All the money you made
Will never buy back your soul

And I hope that you die
And your death'll come soon
I will follow your casket
In the pale afternoon
And I'll watch while you're lowered
Down to your deathbed
And I'll stand o'er your grave
'Til I'm sure that you're dead

or ..Feel Like I'm Fixing To Die Rag (Next Stop Vietnam)
Country Joe & the Fish
Come on all of you big strong men
Uncle Sam needs your help again
he's got himself in a terrible jam
way down yonder in Viet Nam so
put down your books and pick up a gun we're
gonna have a whole lotta fun

(CHORUS)
And it's one, two, three, what are we fighting for
don't ask me I don't give a damn, next stop is Viet Nam
And it's five, six, seven, open up the pearly gates
ain't no time to wonder why, whoopee we're all gonna die

Come on generals, let's move fast
your big chance has come at last
now you can go out and get those reds
cos the only good commie is the one that's dead and
you know that peace can only be won when we've
blown 'em all to kingdom come

Come on wall street don't be slow
why man this war is a go-go
there's plenty good money to be made by
supplying the army with the tools of its trade
let's hope and pray that if they drop the bomb,
they drop it on the Viet Cong

The industry is too busy making money to care. They'd rather sing about sex and murder than protest. Dillan could sure write but boy was he an awful singer.

It is funny, but I think a lot of people in the business know just how nasty the neocons and radio stations can be if you even criticize the idiot.

Look at the Dixie Chicks! They only exercised their 1st Amendment rights and everyone stopped playing the, especially the red neck country and western stations!

Steven Stills just released a CD largely against the war! He said he was tired of waiting for the Me and X generation to get off their dead asses!!

One thing for sure, there would be people in the streets if there were a draft!!

Go here and download "War"!
http://www.jonathabrooke.com/music/index.php

That is true, but they aren't being played, and haven't been for over a year and they have had to cancel many concerts as their tcket sales can't even draw enough people to put on a show!!

The closest thing is Green Day's album American Idiot which is not only critically acclaimed but politically charged. And sold very well.

it is the mainstream success of this album that i feel that other polically minded artist will see that political discourse in music is commecirally viable and hence show some backbone.

Don't wanna be an American idiot.
Don't want a nation under the new media.
And can you hear the sound of hysteria?
The subliminal mindfuck America.

Welcome to a new kind of tension.
All across the alien nation.
Everything isn't meant to be okay.
Television dreams of tomorrow.
We're not the ones who're meant to follow.
Well that's enough to argue.

Well maybe I'm the ****** America.
I'm not a part of a redneck agenda.
Now everybody do the propaganda.
And sing along in the age of paranoia.

Welcome to a new kind of tension.
All across the alien nation.
Everything isn't meant to be okay.
Television dreams of tomorrow.
We're not the ones who're meant to follow.
Well that's enough to argue.

Don't wanna be an American idiot.
One nation controlled by the media.
Information nation of hysteria.
It's going out to idiot America.

Welcome to a new kind of tension.
All across the alien nation.
Everything isn't meant to be okay.
Television dreams of tomorrow.
We're not the ones who're meant to follow.

Listen to Neill Young, U2, even the Rolling Stones are getting in on the act. I don't listen to a lot of alternative stuff, though I'm sure a lot of young people are putting out a lot of good stuff. The mainstream record companies and radio stations have all been taken over by big business so your not going to hear it get a lot of airplay or publicity.

Listen to Neil Young's new album! Especially the song "Let's Impeach the President for Lying" or Bad Religion's newest.
Though why any young mainstream artists don't protest...

FYI Dixie Chicks album #2 sold 1.1 million in four weeks, that's a lot of bling.

Yes Neil Young!

Most of em are too stoned or too young and stupid to do songs.

Besides, you don't make bling singing songs that offend your audience.

Sincerely
