The best American war movie. You have to look at this question in two ways. The best American war movie that glorifies fighting for the U.S and makes it fun to fight a war. OR The best anti-American war movie that shows the real chaos and inhumane acts that happen in wartime. For the first one I would have to say Pearl Harbor and Wind Talkers. Both are Pro U.S films that are filled with inaccuracies and make the enemy (Japan) seem as a bad evil empire that needs to be stopped. While the main characters shoot up enemy soldiers by the hundreds (especially in wind talkers). There is always a love story between some one in the movie evident in Pearl Harbor and Wind talkers both. These movies and many others (Black Hawk Down, and The Green Berets) tend to stretch truths and make the U.S seem as the all-powerful good guy when that is not always the case.

For the second one I would choose the film Platoon. It for the most part is accurate and shows the horrors and unjust acts that took place during Vietnam. The film is overall anti-U. S and is filled with chaotic battle sequences that show a real sense of combat. Full Metal Jacket would also be another film that would be a good example. It is very anti-U. S showing a soldier and his horrible experiences in boot camp leading up to his suicide. Then shifting into Vietnam showing horrible acts of murder and senseless killing. There are two kinds of American war films pro and anti. Movies directed by Hollywood directors tend to be pro American and big budget features made to attract millions of moviegoers. Those few movies that are anti-American aren't usually as popular with the American public and are less as common. The American public I guess would much rather see two famous actors kiss and win a war than see an accurate portrayal of a battle.

Patton, hands down.

Pearl Harbor is crap. Saving Private Ryan has an amazing photography but its too sweet for a war movie. Black Hawk down is great as far as action goes, but ultimately its very shallow. Windtalkers is crap, too.

So, again, the best is Patton. Close second would be River Over River Kwait... amazing acting by Alec Guiness (the original Obi Wan Kenobi)

Saving Private Ryan, because it shows the sacrifices made by people like my father, who served in WW2.

Also, it doesn't glorify war, but shows the negative aspcects of having to kill others. It deals with the reality of warfare, and the responses that young men (and now, women) have to being placed in wartime situations.

It is a war movie that has a very powerful ANTI war message.

"The Deerhunter" (1979) starred Michael Cimino, Robert de Niro, John Savage, Chritopher Walken and Meryl Streep. Its a moving film of how a group young guys who loved to go hunting during long weekends ,enjoy the comaraderie and clean fun suddenly have their lives torn to pieces by a war in farway Vietnam. They all became victims of circumstances way beyond their control.

Saving Private Ryan. It is not a propaganda film like others and doesn't glorify war. It also has great acting.
