This question should probably be phrased, 'How many parents make sure their kids play rather than watch TV?'

Mine do it a lot! In fact, they don't even turn on the TV here at home any more: They just get stuff out & play. I can't even remember the last time they asked to play the Nintendo; it's been a couple months now. (I should note that they do a lot of TV watching & video gaming when they visit their mother's, so it's not like I'm totally depriving them of the experience.)

If a parent encourages & participates, there's no telling what kids will get into! My 8- & 10-yr-old boys play chess (though they've been known to 'add' their own rules & gamepieces now & then!) Right now, the favorite game is backgammon; and they don't need me to play along or even suggest games anymore; they just pick something & do it.

I don't mean to brag (well, maybe a little! :) ) My point is that the parent's expectations will play a HUGE role in how much or little the kids play vs. watch TV.

My kids will actually climb inside the boxes that their toys are shipped in and then play with the toys while inside the boxes. Anyway, now that it's summertime, I just sit outside on the porch while my kids play outside. With my two older kids being school aged, tv isn't really an issue in my household. TV doesn't get watched until after chores and homework. The most tv my kids watch will usually take place on the weekends.

My 11 year old son watches some TV but would rather play outside. My 9 year old daughter only seems to enjoy cartoons in the AM and would rather read or do crafts, and then go out and play.

I try not to let them watch too much tv anyway
