Those were not exactly men that exemplified America's shining moments., especially McCarthy. We seem to have unfortunately slipped back into that mode of operation lately.

Both Hoover and McCarthy represent eras of our country that reflect the little empires they created by their positions of authority. When one has the power, one can distort facts to suit his needs and justify the ends by the means. When you compare the tactics used, were they very different from the inquisition, or the house-cleaning carried out by Russian regimes of the past? Interrogation or 'grilling' was used by McCarthy to imply misdeeds of the victims and few of those people were guilty of crimes against the nation. Hoover was far more subtle and used velvet-gloved blackmail over politicians to expand his fiefdom and his power as well as his image as the 'number one G-man. Such tactics are used world-wide by leaders that fear opposition to their policies or even their jobs. It is said that no president could have fired Hoover as he had all the skeletons in his closet. Many good and loyal congressmen opposed McCathy but the most outspoken was Edgar R. Murrow. Read the congressional records of the hearings. Neither were a credit to our nation.

I am one of the dying breed.
Joe McCarthy was awesome the man proved the communists were here and in our government but try to teach a liberal that and you get censorship.
I say maybe McCarthy got a few people wrong..but who cares? When the man took down those communist ***********, it was something that America needed.
The American Left - Always hating America.
The American Right - Always for America.

What?! Joe McCarthy (with Bobby Kennedy at his side) was a nut who ruined many people's lives until they discovered a brain tumor in Joe's head. Let's not get into Edgar.

well, one obvious example is the backlash that Michael Moore recieved when he did Farenheit 9/11, and when the Dixie Chicks made their famous statement. One can definitely make a solid argument that America is not progressing socially. We certainly are in some ways regressing back to McCarthyism.

As I get older, I am realizing that humans learn NOTHING from history.
Yes, we have forgotten all about it.
