I have violets growing under a tree...I know that violets like neutral soil, about pH 7. The Soil is at pH 5.5 right now, and they are yellowing a bit. I know that coffee grounds make the soil more acidic, but I didn't know if there was anything out there (maybe baking soda) that would make the soil more alkaline.

I know lime will lower the acidity, but I am looking for household stuff. The ashes from the fireplace is a good suggestion. How about Baking soda or egg shells?

Eggshells or ashes from the fireplace or any wood fire will reduce the acidity of the soil.

Go to your local garden center and purchase lime ( not the fruit), It will come in a powder form. Till the soil and mix in the lime. It will lower the acid in the soil considerably.
