You could just sit and watch him for a while. If you are looking for an easier way to clean, there isn't. You still need to clean up all bedding and replace with fresh bedding so you don't attrack parasites and grow mold or other fungus that would affect your hamster's health.

Most hamsters have one corner that they like to pee in. When you are cleaning out the bedding (natural paper bedding, NO cotton or wood chips- Carefresh is the brand I recommend), it will be wet/sticky in once corner.

That's the jackpot.
