I don't want to sound or naggy and mean but you really shouldn't have agreed in the first place if you weren't interested in going with him. How would you like it if you asked some guy liked and then found out he had only said yes becuase his mate was going and he wanted to hang out with him? Not good i would imagine.
Part of me wants to say that you should still go and have a good time with him and possibly make a new friend, and when you get to know him who knows what would happen. But, i know what it's like to have to go somewhere that you are dreading going to. You will possibly be in a foul mood all night and have a very miserable time and, in turn, this guy would too.
I think you need to be upfront with him, don't lie because he will find out. I'm not sure why but the truth always gets back in the end and is it really worth hurting him twice just so you can try and save face? I would just give him a call and and "look, i know i agreed to go with you but circumstance have changed and i won't be going now" don't say you won't be able to of anything like that. That way you haven't lied but also haven't had to hurt him but admitting that you never liked him in the first place.
