I know a lot about Europe, and have visited over 20 countries there. I'm not typical of most people in the US, however.
One thing I've learned in my travels there is that in Europe, not many people really know anything about the US either. They know what they read in the paper occasionally, but other than that not much (no history, geography, politics, etc.). If they've been here they know a little more, but there are still a lot of misconceptions.
You're the exception in Europe, also. Honestly, only people that travel a great deal really learn what other countries are about. It's quite the same on both sides of the pond.

Because they don't learn much about Europe and what they do learn, they forget. The only time that it comes up in elementary school is in the 6th grade, but you have to teach the whole world. It might come up again in World Cultures in third year high school.
You should see how bright some people are on here. Lots don't know much about their own history or even what's happening now. You can see what I mean from the answers you're getting.

hey! lighten up about america & americans. your english is way beyond questionable but that aside, i find that europeans know jack about america so maybe it's even/steven. what europeans know about america is mostly gotten from the movies (we all know how accurate that is!) and by magazines, media in general. it's a start but isn't that how americans learn about europe or anywhere in the world. few of us have the chance to travel & if we go by the (history) book & that's inaccurate, well...! the one thing my momma taught me as a child is not to judge another least you be judged too. just a parting shot across your so misinformed bow, over a 100 years ago immigrants came to america thinking its streets were paved with gold & money lying around. were they well-informed? oh yeah like not! but they readjusted their values & survived. i can tell you one thing that might save your life, one day. when you meet an american do not ever slam america or our knowledge. i can't begin to tell what's wrong with that! oh & never ever use a double negative in the same sentence. it's so rude!

The history that we learn in school is the history that the govt wants us to learn. And that includes very little european history. It's a shame though, because that's where some of us come from. Same goes for africa or asia. We learn very little. We spend less then a year on european history and even less then that on other cultures.

Most don't even know the 50 states. Everyone knows public schools are lacking in the U.S. But another question for you might be what have you learned about the United States in England?

We 'muricans can hardly learn 'bout our own history. Hows we supposed to learn about them 'peans?
Most of the elementary teachers I've known knew little about Europe ; making it exceedingly difficult to accurately teach the tots on the subject.
Of course, one could adopt the POV that it doesn't really matter much; that boat has sailed. We better concentrate on teaching the kids chinese instead.

Sadly, American ignorance, arrogance, selfishness, and closed mindedness is your answer. Many Americans are superficial and full of hot air.
Many Americans believe that the world rotate around them. Many Americans are cruel to many Nations and races and then Americans ask the most famous stupid question "Why do they hate US"!
Americans Families & societies are based on hollow grounds with no morals and values exist. American People always have on their minds "sex+party+drugs (like alcohol and etc)", and behave worse than dogs. Many Americans are in love with dogs and cats more than trying to love neighbors and families.
Most Americans who came to America were criminals from other counteries and this criminal behavior transferred through their Blood.
I hope we as America could change ourselves, fight the demons inside us and better out selves.

Not only do most Americans not know anything about Europe, they don't know much about the US either!!!! Sure, ask them where is the best place to buy condoms, and they will answer quickly.
The public education system leaves much to be desired.
