Patel is a very common name in India. It is easier to get a green card into the U.S.A. if you can buy a business and guaranty hiring several American citizens. Owning and running a motel is an easier and less expesive busines to acquire.

The Asian American Hotel Owners Association has more than 8,000 members, and 60 percent are named Patel. Given that the group says about 37 percent of the hotels and motels in the United States are owned by their members, this would mean that about one in every five of these facilities in the country is owned by somebody named Patel.

The name Patel means, approximately, "merchant", and it is a widespread surname in the province of, if I am not mistaken, Gujarat in India, accounting for something like 20% of the population of that state. A lot of Gujaratis have emigrated to nations in the West, and tend to be very entrepreneurially inclined. And they have moved into motel management and ownership in the U.S. in a big way.
