A pitcher records two outs and then a batter reaches base on an error against them. A new pitcher is brought in and they give up several earned runs. I know that the original pitcher is charged with an unearned run, but how about the reliever? Are the runs he gave up earned or unearned?

This is an unusual situation but this is how it is handled. All of the runs that the reliever gives up are earned for the reliever. However, in the official team stats, the runs are recorded as unearned. This doesn't happen often but that is how the stats are recorded.

All runs scored after an error (with 2 outs) are unearned. You determine this by reconstructing the inning, assuming the error would have been an out. In this case, the inning would have been over. Therefore, all runs scored after that would be unearned. Pretty sweet for the reliever, huh?

Any run that comes in an inning after an error that would have been the 3rd out is an unearned run. I would say that the reliever gets credited with unearned runs for that inning.

All the runs are unearned. The inning should have been over but for the error.

The runs are unearned because they never would have scored if the error had not occurred after two outs.

I hope this helps.

It's just like any other situation, the runs he gave up were earned unless the guy reaches base by error.
