We have a 2001 Ford Escape V-6 and the air conditioning is barely cooler than just the fan alone. I thought it just needed a shot of freon, so we had the diagnostics performed at the Ford dealership and was told that everything is within specs. No problems. Zip. Nada. Nichts. After paying the $110 and sweating like a *bleep* in church on the way home, I thought to myself, "This is wrong on so many levels. Those mechanics are full of poopoo!" Anyway, thought I might give this Yahoo question thing a try. Any ideas would be appreciated. We have a 10 month old, and she is just soaked in sweat everytime I take her somewhere.

The Ford technicians would be in the wrong here. Get a thermometer and put it in the dash vents, run your vehicle at 2000RPM at max a/c. The temperature should be around or near 35-45 degrees F. Otherwise, something is wrong!
FYI: you can buy r-134a re-charge kits at walmart and they are practically idiot proof.

Obviously the Ford dealerships diagnostics seems incorrect. If everything was within specs, your AC would be cold. I would recommend having your vehicle inspected by an AC repair shop. Measured temperature comming out of your vents should be around 45 degrees. This would be a noticible difference from not having your AC on.
One possibility is that the ford dealership only checked specs on your AC system. That is they checked the refrigerant level, checked for blockages in the AC lines, and whether the compressor and other mechanical items are functioning properly. The additional step is to check the duct work. There is a mechanical flap that is supposed to rout the cooled air to your vents. If this flap is stuck or broken, you are not getting enough or any of the cooled air into the cab of your vehicle. AC shops can diagnose and repair this for you. Before you take it in, try turning the recirulating (MAX) AC on and off a few times with the fan speed at full blast and see if this resolves your problem. Also, if your area is VERY HOT or humid, you will acheive better cooling efficiency by operating your AC in the normal, non-recirculating mode (not MAX) first as the inside temperature of the cabin can be much hotter than the outside air. It also helps to open the windows and vent the hot air out for a couple of minutes when you first get in the car. Once the air is a little cool, then run the AC on MAX. Also think about tinting your windows to keep the inside temperatures down when your vehicle is just sitting in the sun. Good luck.

Max, wander over to the hardware store and purchase a 99 cent thermometer.
Get in the Escape, crank on the air, and hold the thermometer in front of the vent. After three or four minutes, check the temperature. If it's 100 degrees outside, being 20 or 25 degrees cooler in the car is reasonable.
Check the settings. There's a setting for the dash, for the floor, for defrost, etc. there's also a setting that says either "max" or "recirc" or has a circular arrow. Choose that setting. Make sure the temperature knob is rotated all the way into the blue part of that knob to make it the coolest.
Check the thermometer again.
If it's still too warm, take it back to the Ford dealer, and speak to the service manager.

When you take your car to a dealership them lazy bastards don't do anything but charge you a WAY OVER PRICE fee and they never seem to fix anything. Just like your a/c it was a waist of money to go there. If i was you seance you have payed them to look at it and they say there is nothing wrong with it .I would take it back and tell them if there is nothing wrong with it then why is it not working. And tell them if they don't fix it that you will call ford motor co. about it. Because if it is just getting a little cooler than the fan is then it NEEDS freon or the heat exchange is stuck half why between worm and cool

FIRST I would contact the BBB then Consumer affairs - THEN Contact FORD Headquarters - NOT the Dealership ! THERE Headquarters do not like hearing about how there dealerships are ripping off people.I've been there-done that.Been a mechanic to long & have seen MANY people do what i suggested.
