Strictly speaking the lens, but, without the structure supporting the lens and the mechanism that controls focus, the scope still wouldn't work.

The oculars are 10x plus the objective that your using. 4x, 10x, 40x, etc. To figure out total magnification you multiply 10x the objective lens. For instance, an objective on 40x will magnify the object 400x.

Total magnification is equal to the ocular lense mag x objective mag

ie. 10 x ocular x 45 x objective makes 450X magnification
