That smell is bacteria that has made itself at home in the plastic. You should definitely throw it out and buy a new one. Be sure to empty it often so the diapers don't sit for too long or it will happen again.

When you put a new genie refill in it, or when you cut the genie refill, due to the genie being full, and tie it to keep the refill going sprinkle some carpet fresh right on the knot along with a few dryer sheets, or spray some Febreeze directly on the knot of the plastic liner on the genie refill. I do this and it seems to help with the smell.

I have the same problem and, honestly, have found no solution. I've cleaned it with every possible cleaning solution there is, and nothing. Still smells. It's like embedded in there. I've just taken it out of the baby's room and put it in the bathroom. It keeps the smells inside while it's closed but once you open it to put a diaper in it, oh! Yeah, I haven't found anything that works, so I just put it outside the baby's room.

I really hate those things. I had one years ago. Try putting baking soda in the bottom in between cleanings. And this may sound weird but it works. Go to Petsmart and get the cleaner for pet urine stains ( I forgot the name). They can help you find it there. Just clean it with that and it works. Hope this helps. Blessings.

throw it away
I was only able to use mine for a few months before it filled up in a matter of hours (the diapers get bigger). Just get a regular trash pail with a lid. You will have to get something else eventually anyway.

that's why i don't use a diaper genie, they smell and it's disgusting to have that smell in the house. i throw diapers in the trash, if they're smelly ones i wrap them in a plastic bag first. and since you take out the trash often you don't have to worry about that smell.

I think that you'll have to buy a new one. After several months my diaper genie wasn't effective at all.

sprinkle carpet freshening powder in the bottom after you clean it. Thats what I did and it worked pretty well.
