That sounds like... GLOBALIZATION!

Lots of people are afraid of globalization, but not me. (Mass, cross-cultural communication and electronic technology are actually allowing us to diversify and retain separate identities. (See Marshall Mcluhan, Thomas Hylland Eriksen or Google for an article called 'My Hometown is a URL in cyberspace' about the resurgence of ethnic identities due to the internet.))

However, I find it difficult to cope with the many layers of bureaucracy in my current life. First of all I have the local government which is 'the city and county of Swansea', then above that is the national government - 'the Welsh Assembly', then above that is the British government, and overruling them is the European Union and (supposedly) the United Nations. Before you could start a World government you'd have to weed out a few of these, preferably the British Government as Blair is growing increasingly irritating.

There's also the problem of which political system to use. We hear so much about the glory of democracy, but some cultures just don't seem to want it. Also, democratic elections could cause mayhem in a world government; there'd be so many parties that there might not be a majority and they'd never ever agree on anything! And for such a moral force as a world government, you'd be aiming to get as close to consensus as possible. Would there be proportional representation of votes? Would minority groups resent this?

So much to decide... but who would make the decisions?

We dont need one, perhaps if we armed the UN properly and gave it the powers to punish the g8 states we wouldnt need one government. We need legislation with teeth, things like Kyoto with balls. Perhaps if punishment for breaching kyoto was some form of trade embargo, the industrial west would pay attention more

Yes, we do. We also need a world army, navy and airforce. We need one currency and one language. We need one standard to conform to and one religion to unite us. We need help.
