I was nervous the first time too, but you'll be fine!! Remember, if you don't get it right the first time, you're only out one tampon.
OK, the first time I tried it, it was uncomfortable, but it didn't hurt. Turned out that it wasn't in all the way. Don't try to use the OB tampons on your first attempt. I recommend getting a slim fit with a soft plastic applicator for your first attempt.
I'll try to make this specific but hopefully not too graphic: The key is to grab the applicator on the ridges. These are specifically there for you to grip. Then, while sitting, insert the applicator all the way until your fingers touch your skin while holding the applicator on the ridges. If you don't find a comfortable internal position right away, pull it back out and try again. You can do this until your comfortable, because you did not push on the plunger. Once it is comfortable, use your other hand to push the plunger. Pull out the applicator and put it back in the packaging to throw it away. The only thing sticking out at this point should be the string.
Like I said, if you don't get it right the first time, remove it and try it again. More tips for tampon use: always check to make sure you don't have one in when you are putting in a new one (I've heard stories); wear them between 4 and 6 hours; when you are not swimming, a pantiliner is a good backup for minor leakage; hold the string out of the way when using the restroom while still wearing a tampon (this prevents infections).

One - the chance of getting an infection from a tampon is very slight if you use them correctly. You should not wear one for more than 8 hours (which you probably would not be able to do if you have a very heavy flow anyway). You should also use the size you need, if you are having a heavy day, use a super - a regular day, usa a regular - a light day you can either use a pad or they now have tampons for light flow days.
Two - there are detailed instructions that come in the box. If you follow the instructions, you should have no problems. The tampon can only go in one way, and as long as you have the string hanging outside the body you know it is in right. It will not get lost inside you. It shouldn't hurt, just be gentle and don't force it. It may take one or two tries to get the hang of it. It is freeing to wear tampons instead of pads. If you are still scared or having problems, you should go see a gynecologist. (Which if you have extremely heavy flows with major cramping, she can help you with that also). I know this is long-winded, but I hope it helps.

First, buy a brand which has a plastic applicator, not a cardboard one. That makes things much easier. My favourite brand personally is Tampax compax.
Try to find ones which are designed for lighter days when you're just starting out. Yes, you'll probably have to change it more often, but they're very small so easiest to learn with.
When you're going to put one in, you have to relax. Get into a position where it will be easiest - most people suggest sitting on the toilet with your legs wide apart, or putting one foot on the edge of the bath. Personally, I find the easiest way is to crouch down with my knees wide apart.
Take the tampon in your right hand (assuming you're right handed). Spread the labia with your left hand and gently insert the tampon into the vagina. Push it in gently until the fingers of your right hand are touching the skin. That's the most important part - it has to be far enough in or it will be uncomfortable. If you're having trouble getting it in, try pushing slightly to one side or the other, or slightly rotating the tampon as you push it in. If you find it a bit dry going in, you could try using a bit of vaseline on the tip of the tampon.
Once the fingers of your right hand are touching the skin, use your left hand to push the applicator in all the way, as far as it goes - again, if you feel a bit of resistance try pushing slightly to one side or the other, then withdraw the applicator and the tampon should be in place.
If the tampon is in the right place, you won't be able to feel it inside you at all. It's difficult to get the hang of at first, but just keep trying, I promise you it's worth it!!! No more messy pads, no more gushing of blood when you sneeze or move position.......tampons are definitely the way to go!!! Good luck!

If this is your first time with tampons, try OB mini, just to get used to them. If the flow is heavy, you might have to change it every 2-3 hours. Follow the instruction in the package. They're very easy and don't worry. Just wash your hands before you use it and don't drop the tampon on the floor or something like that.

wow, yours last 10 days? oh man that must be horrible. mine last a week and only the first three days are heavy. i really dont know how to put one in. i use pads. my best friend is a nurse and she learned from so many other nurses that is not safe to put a tampon in you. yes they make them and yes a lot of girls use them and a lot have no problems. but infections can occure and in your case, since you said you have heavy flows, i think the first couple of days you should wear pads and do not swin. i dont think you would want to swin even with a tampon on on heavy days. you might leak and that will be the end of your summer due to embarassment.

you must be very young. If you are bleeding "heavy" the tampon should be easy to insert. It wont hurt, and it wont sting. Maybe talk to an older sister or one of your close friends mom. As far as bleeding for 10 days, that is not normal you need to let someone know.

just relax, if you stressed all the muscles tense up and maybe fitting your tampon in is such a challenge now. did u try to fit one already? try a junior size one or a regular. stay away from super or super plus. there really isnt much space where a tampon can get so lost its gone forever.... it can only go so far. so relax, take a breath and try to fit your tampon in ( it only goes in through one end, the string needs to stay outside). you will notice that it fits itself in one position and then it stays there. it you are using an applicator, just discard it. good luck !!!
