I know this person who has rats ( I love them think they are greaat have 1 myself,) He has already had female that died, form bleeding vaginally--Now his new female rat is bleeding vaginally.
It really is not that much blood, but what could cause this??? I need to know if it could be abuse...Not that not taking them to the vet isn't abuse--but he is my neighbor, and, helps me alot. but could it be coincidence just from being pregnant?? Now hes talking about getting more!!!! Hes obsessed w/ having baby rats--has 4 already.

Should I call Animal Protective Services?? And if I do is it anonymous??

Rats should not bleed to death from normal mestral cycles. if you suspect abuse then you have a right to notify the animal protective services. ( which can be anonymous) there are many possible reasons for the death some could be due to congenital defects, others could be abuse. the thing that concerns me the most is the lack of veterinary care for the rats, as well as the desire to get more. there are people who colect animals these individuals have the idea that they are helping the animal by taking care of them. they may lack the resourses to properly care for the numbers of animals which they have. this is a serious problem and should be reported as animal neglect or abuse. urge your frend to cunsult a veterinarian about the breeding and raising of rats.

Is there any other reasons for your being concerned with abuse? Animals bleed for various reasons. Did she just have babies? It's normal to bleed after birth as the body expells the "gunk" that had been built up during gestation. It's also normal to bleed a bit before delivery, as the body begins to loosen to release the pups. It's possible they have uterine infections, especially if they are being bred so often. An untreated uterine infection will kill anything (from rats to humans). Is it possible he'll let you have this female that's bleeding so you could get her some attention?

And if it comes down to it, yes, you can file a complaint for animal cruelty/neglect anonymously.

It's possible that it's from abuse, but female rats have a lot of reproductive problems. They usually get mammary tumors.

I don't know that anything could be proven one way or the other, and even if you report him anonymously, it may be obvious that it was you that reported him.

If you think it's worth it, you could call them and tell them what you've seen. However, it's difficult making an enemy out of a neighbor.

A good site for rat info is www.rmca.org. A link to specifics about urinary problems is below...
