I just saw a question asking "what is the legal age for piercing?"

What makes you decide that you must have this or that tattooed or pierced?

Stephen Franzoi, a social psychologist who studies physical attractiveness and body esteem at Marquette University, agrees that young adults now view (body modification) as a mainstream form of self-expression. But savor the paradox: "Interestingly enough," he points out, "the desire to express your own unique qualities, is, in one sense, an act of conformity. It's a social norm that an increasing number of young adults are conforming to."

I think that people get tattoos and peircings to fit it, or to get noticed. I have one small tatt which is covered all the time. (Wish I never got it). My sister has several and wishes she never got hers either. Piercings...I can see a girl having her ears pierced or prehaps even a boy having a ring in his ear, all the others have no purpose other than to have people say "bet that hurt". Wanting to inflict pain on ones self for no answer. This younger generation is going to one day have ear lobes that hang to their sholders from gadging them so big, and when they are 60 it's not just going to be "cool" anymore. (Kind of like smoking) Perhaps they can't look far enough into the future to realize what it is exactly they are doing. I mean when they turn 60 and wrinkled those tatts are just going to be a glob of ink anyway.

Because it's a great accessory that you get to carry around with you for life (or as long as you want). Most of my tattoos are places where I can either cover them or show them off.

Personal expressions of oneself and going against the grain. Like being tribal and a rebel at the same time.
