Never download programs that are "free", but are not open source and can not be checked for hidden malware.
There are plenty of websites where you can download free and legal music. Read http://baseportal.com/baseportal/goodsounds/howto to learn more. These sites do not have the stuff that is played all day long on the radio, so your teenagers might not be interested in that. Try to teach them how the music industry works. Google "what's wrong with the music industry".
Good luck.

Most music download are fairly safe. Especially if it is P2P download. Because if someone finds a virus in a file, they will either report it or delete the file so that others won't download from it.
If the site it self is letting people download, make sure that site is trust worthy. But, programs like shares and kaaza that let you download from other people are usually safe.
(it sounds like it would be more dangerous to download from other peoples computer but. .. . its usually safer for some reason.)
As for virus issues. .. . Even America online has viruses/trogen. You only really need to worry about Virus that are harmful.

Kazaa and Ares are good music downloading programs that are free but you can also subscribe to them. I use Ares and have had no problems. I would check out their website because it includes all the details. They protect against viruses. Free music downloading is risky because it is usually illegal and the government is very strict. For a good music downloading program with no viruses fye.com is great but they charge $1 a song.

I like it. I download all the time. As far as Im concerned, its still free on the internet and until they make me pay for it-- i wont.
I used limewire and had no problems. I *think* you only get a virus if you download porn. I could be wrong tho. ALWAYS scan every download with norton anti-virus. To do this, you have to right click the file and then hit scan with, then norton.
have fun

of course using limewire is most likely going to give you illegal downloads but have antivirus software such as norton or mcaffee and have a spyware program like spysweeper or just get a mac!

I think most of them are pretty safe. The ones I use most often are:
www.mp3shits.com
www.emp3world.com
www.yourmp3.net
www.myspace.com
But sometimes MySpace has technical difficulties.
Good luck with these websites! ^_^
