Without an atmosphere, our sky would be black witha bright sun in the middle. That is because all teh ligt comes from teh sun. When a planet has an atmosphere, the light scatters of teh nitrogen molecules in teh air. Thin of it as light hitting a molecule and bouncing off in all directions. That way light that is not directed towards us gets redirected by teh scatering so light seem sto be coming from all parts of the sky.
Scattering intensity increases with shorter wavelenght, so blue light gets scattered the most. (actually UV gets scattered even more so the sky is brighter at UV frequencies)
At sunset, the sunlight has to go through a lot more atmosphere then at noon. So scattering increases so much that only red light is left.
Try it for yuorself:shine a flashlight at a glass of milk in teh dark and see the milk tunr blue or red

Its not a bio question. Anyways here goes:
A clear cloudless day-time sky is blue because molecules in the air scatter blue light from the sun more than they scatter red light. When we look towards the sun at sunset, we see red and orange colours because the blue light has been scattered out and away from the line of sight.

Why does this question come up on this site every damn day?
Gas parcicles in our atmosphere cause the sunlight to break into it's individual frequencies. Blue colour is scattered the most, so that's the colour the sky appears to be.

In the color scheme of life, red dissipates faster than blue. Check out a rainbow and you can see the faster colors bending the slower colors. You think rainbows are different? No, always the same colors from top to bottom. Now, Blue dissipates at a slower rate than other colors but is not the slowest, but it is however visible to us because of the frequency. Its like hearing some sounds, but we cannot hear all sounds.
