Studying history tells us of our past. It tells of the people who made important decisions and these decisions led to important events. It sounds simplistic, but it's true.
History teaches us lessons: what went right, what went wrong, and how we can learn from these lessons.
Those who do not learn from history are condemned to repeat the mistakes of those who came before them.
History also tells us of how people lived. This is especially important and interesting. Those who led "regular" lives are those who built countries, fought and died for their countries and left legacies for their children.

History, well US history is one of my favorite subjects. As a kid I thought it was pretty pointless until I got older and took a very in depth course. That's when I learned to love it and realized how important it was. US history teaches us how our country has evolved over time, what went wrong and what went right. It leads the way to learning about the way government and politics....and today that is really important. Being educated about this stuff is a good thing, since we do vote after all, and that way we can learn to make better choices.
As for world history, I've always hated it for some reason but when it comes down to everything, it's just as important to learn our roots since we all originate from different countries around the world.

The Ancient Greek Historians(Herodotus and Thucydides) described for the first time the importance of History. (Actually they were the first Historians)
We learn and study history so that we learn from our past and see how not to repeat the same mistakes that have been done before!

I think history is important because learning about our history today can help us with making decisions in the future. Take for instance Hitler's attacking Russia in the winter. He failed to realize that the harsh winter would destroy his army as it had done to Napoleon's army before.

So that they won't make the mistakes of the past. I don't feel that they should learn all of the history that is taught to them at school. Columbus didn't discover America and Lincoln didn't free the slaves.

As a Head Start teacher, we have been trained to teach children, and their families, about their culture. This provides a connection with the past, develops pride in who they are and intrigues their interest in other historic areas.

It begins at point A and continues to Z, if you have no knowledge of your history you do not know where A is .Therefore if becomes more difficult to locate point Z

'History doesn't repeat itself...it just rhymes.'- Mark Twain
I think children should learn history because it teaches them how society and culture developed.
