The number represents the most relevant website to your search criteria. The results you get from the google or yahoo search engine is determined partially by the information you are looking for and the amount of money that was paid to google or yahoo to put a certain website before another. And for you final question, if you knew how the search engine algorithm was structured, you would become a rich person. (meaning: that information is proprietary)

The 1 - 10 means the first 10 sites relating to your search are listed on the page. Each page will have 10 listings. The 100000000 means they have that many sites found.

This does not mean there are that many sites directly related to your search perameters. Here is how it works. When you type in your search perameters Lets say "How do I prepare and cook dog"?(this is only for example purposes, I do not cook or eat dog). The first few sites listed will directly relate to your perameters as closely as they can. So lets say 5 sites directly relate and give you preparation and cooking instructions and receipes.

All the rest of the sites listed will only relate to individual words in your perameters. It will list sites that have the word or relate to COOK, DOG, PREPARE etc.

Here is the Yahoo search page for that exact question. Notice it does not list one on cooking dog but many on "How to" for hot dogs then chicken and even How to prepare for a Thunderstorm.

There are sites that will give advice on search techniques to help you find what you want. Here is one:
