First decide how you want to sell -- via your own website or through eBay.

Here are the pros and cons of each approach

CREATING YOUR OWN WEBSITE

Pros
- allows you to establish your own "real estate" on the Web;
- allows you to attract a bigger audience; not limited to eBay buyers (not everyone buys on eBay)
- scaleable as it allows your business to grow;
- allows you to give more information about your business to your visitors and give them reasons to trust you
- allows you to give more information about the product, play around with factors that can increase conversion
- gives you a more professional look
- makes you look like a "big" business (an e-commerce seller that also sells on ebay "looks" so much bigger than a purely ebay seller)
- you can put in as many items you want without paying listing fees
- you can sell as many items as you can without paying value added fees
- less restrictions than eBay (you are more free to write your sales copy)
- easier to market on the Web

Cons:
- requires technical knowhow to create a website (or money to pay someone to do it for you)
- fixed price (price you set is what you get)

SELLING ON EBAY

Pros
- auction format; prices can go up higher than you originally set it for
- eBay's brand and size of its market

Cons
- listing and final value fees
- lots of restrictions
- harder to get onto search engines
- link exchanges are more difficult
- increasing competition (it is not as easy to sell now on eBay compared to others)

I would say it depends on what you want with your business. If you have a steady supply of product to sell (not just based on what you can find in your attic), I would go create a website - and THEN use eBay as an additional sales channel. You just have more room to operate and grow your business with having your own store.

If you are starting your own online store, here are the components of an ecommerce store http://www.powerhomebiz.com/vol13/components.htm

1. Website - Your online connection to your prospects and customers.

2. Merchant account - Bank authorized account which allows you to accept major credit cards, electronic checks, etc.

3. Payment Transaction Software - Software which actually processes customer order information, address, credit card number, etc.

4. Secure Server Connection - https:// - Link to a special computer which encrypts confidential ordering data for customer protection.

5. Shopping cart - Software which allows you to accept product orders for multiple products from your website.

Think of all your interests & ask yourself if any of those could be expanded into a business. Just keep in mind...what's your expertise? What are your interests? What could you imagine yourself doing?

By researching the prospect of starting your own business -- what it entails, what you need to know, helpful hints, etc -- you'll feel better prepared to take that plunge.

I found some book titles that are relevant to your specific question:

Creating your own web site is usually a very complex task. When accomplished you still need to invest big money to promote yourself in Google and other search engines. I would go with e-bay or try the new Google Buy Gbuy I think it is called. With Google you will be selling in no time.

try this. no investment required. free sign-up. free website immediately after signing up. no inventory to keep. no quotas to fill. NOT MLM. not a get rich quick scheme. no recruiting required. simple payment/profit scheme. fun and easy to do!

of course, like in any business you have, the amount and quality of work that you put into it will reflect in the profits that you get in return. it does not run on autopilot nor can it make money while you sleep as others claim. but, you can work as much or as little as you want to get what you want to achieve.

Want to do a online business? Well how about checking this company out and see if you like it. It doesn't cost me to join this company.

They will give you a company shared domain with the online office.
