My 1998 Jeep Cherokee makes a loud thump when shifted from drive to reverse and from reverse to drive, and it shakes when I take a curve. I'm pretty good with car repairs but I haven't found the root of the problem. I've taken apart the transfer case and rear end and found no mechanical problems. I've seen online that the linkage for the 4-wheel drive shifter may need replacing. Any thoughts?

The transfer case is ok, and so is the rear end. I have the front drive shaft out, and the engine mounts are good. Could it still be in the front end? The transmission shift good, and doesn't slip. I'm finding it hard to believe that it could be in the transmission. Any thoughts? Please Help!

Sounds like universal joints are wore out, or maybe your engine mounts are broken and when you shift from R to 1st you whole drivetrain moves. If you are a trusting person, get under the vehicle with some chock blocks(bricks pieces of wood) in front of and in back of both rear tires and have someone hold the brake. Then have them shift the transmission back and forth and look and listen for the sound from underneath. That is the dangerous route or pay the dealer 75 dollars to inspect your vehicle.

I wouldn't think shifter linkage would cause that. Usually bad linkage just means a wobbly shifter or will make it not go into/out of gear.

Check the universal or CV joints on the axles and the transmission mount(s). The fact it shakes when there is a side load (on a curve) sounds like it's an issue with outboard parts (wheels, axles, etc.) that rotate, not something central, like the tranny or rearend.

Check your transmission mount and u-joints I have heard this noise on most jeep products and is usually associated with drive line slack...

Could be drive shaft or universal joints most likely. Also check to see if you got chipped off teeth on any cogs .

First thing i would do is check mounts if not it might be your dampening springs in torque converter but you'd have to tare apart your transmission and that gets expensive

Sure sounds like a U-joint to me. If it's that loud, then it's in bad shape. Replace it pronto!

Check your U-Joints and engine mounts or trans mount. If they are broken, you will get that clunking noise all day.

inspect the splined slip joint on the front drive shaft. the male splines are plastic coated and it wears out often.
