Everyone makes mistakes.

Unfortunately, some mistakes are more forgivable than others. I think in general some Americans are not very tolorant of mistakes especially very obvious ones like mixing present, past and future tenses or using the wrong pronoun (for gender or number) or making mistakes with irregular verbs or irregular plurals. These kind of mistakes are ones that we are taught not to make. Mistakes that prevent the listener from understanding you will disturb communication. Sometimes using the wrong word can lead to confusion.

That being said there are sympathetic listeners out there who will be very patient with mistakes. It just depends. It also depends on the situation where you are using the language. If you are a teaching assistant in a college giving a lecture, your students will expect you have have a high command of English and the ability to communicate with them.

But I think mistakes made in grammar are more forgivable than mistakes made related to pragmatics. For example, if you meet someone on the street and ask "How much money do you make?" or "How old are you?", the person you asked is likely to be offended because it is not socially appropriate to ask these kind of questions, even though they are grammatically correct.

Hey, it is not only or always the immigrants making English mistakes. A lot of Anglo-Saxon teachers, Italian Americans, all kinds of x number generation American teachers make English mistakes. I've seen it with my kids' teachers. You think the deplorable state of education and culture in this country's schools is due to immigrants? Many immigrants only get Green Cards because they have a very high level of education.

I'd say that more than half of my teachers used incorrect grammar in their tests! Only the English teachers have good grammar usage. Teachers are horrible in America and they do not have to know correct grammar. Same with vocabulary, although teachers have to pass the SAT, which involves good vocabulary, to go to college and become a teacher. Have a nice day =)

Many teachers regularly make mistakes. However, the teacher's job is to teach kids how to learn, find information, and organize that information and their thoughts. Grammar, spelling, and all the other subjects are merely vehicles for this "hidden curriculum."

It's not the lack of perfection that gets me down. It's the lack of caring and the fact that so many people don't even try.

Somebody mashes out some incoherent sentence and then gets indignant because nobody will answer him. It's like a homeless dude spitting on your shoes and then asking you for spare change.

I suppose it depends on the context. If you are teaching Honors Literature, then your grammar and spelling should be impeccable. However, if you are ordering a beer at the local Pub, then as long as your grammar results in a glass of beer being placed in front of you, all is forgiven. ;)

Are you kidding? Of course, everyone makes mistakes. Look at our President. Don't worry about your grammar and just work hard.

No one is prefect. I am going to school to be an English teacher, and my grammer is far from prefect. I have a bad habit of using double negatives. When I write online, my grammer is horrible.
