I had a guy detail my car, and he just delivered it to me at my place of work. After he left, I thought, hey, maybe I should have tipped him. I did pay $160 for the service...so should I also have tipped him? What's the protocol?

Detail guy, Dent guy, Paint guy any and all of them you should tip if you are happy with the service provided. Normal tipping is 10-20% of the job price.

Sure Detailers get paid but does anyone realize how dirty of a job this really is? This person has to climb through your filth and grim, scrub it clean, and so on. They get filthy head to toe, work in a dirty area cause all the dirt from each car is now in their work area. It is worse than a garbage man at times.

Plus the costs he has to deal with is unreal. A $160 job, after he pays rent, bills, wax, help, water bill, electric, tire shine, engine degreaser, buffing pads, wax towels, etc etc....he MIGHT of profited $65. Now if he spent 3 hours on your car...he made just a little over $20 an hour for working hard like a dog.

I use to do detailing first hand......it is a bottom end job, bottom of the automotive paint sector and few do a good job anymore.

If this guy did a great job on your car, and offered a pick up and drop off service...and you didn't tip him. I personally would go out of my way to tip this guy. He will remember it and take extra care of your car the next time he has it.

A tip can go along way....a very long way. It shows the person they work was appreciated...in turn they work harder for you the next time.

He performed a service for you. Delivering your car to your work is not part of detailing. You should have inspected the car 1st. If he done an outstanding job on your car, then yes it would have been a nice gesture on your part to tip. Next time, try this. Try giving a $10 tip before he starts the job for himself and ask him to take extra special care of your car, Wait to see what your caer looks like when you get it back. You will see litle freebies of extra work put into your car. You will be greeted like a lifelong customer too. A little bit goes a long way.

If you're satisfied with the way he completed the detailing job and how the car looks, then by all means tip him. I've done that work myself, and it is hard, greasy, sometimes frustrating and always time consuming. But he shouldn't get a tip if he didn't do a decent job.

Protocol dictates that you offer a small tip after someone performs a "service" on your behalf. $5-10 would have been sufficient.
