A few reasons and not necessary the thermostat
1. Check you coolant (BUT not when it is hot). If you are not sure how to do that then consult the manual since now-days it not straight forward on all cars.
2. Your electric fans may maybe not turning on. Check the fans and sensors.
3. I had experience with a water pump impeller getting eroded so check you fluid flow.
4. If it is the coolant then check where it is leaking. It can be a hose or the radiator or the pump or .. we will not go there.
5. And check your belts. (But I think you have done that already)

Several things to check. 1 thermostst.. least likley. Make sure your transmission oil, motor oil are full, verify your coolant level is full, no more than 60% anti-freeze to water ratio. Next check to see if you have an electric fan that works, if not electric, your fan clutch could be worn-out. Next, if the vehicle is also loosing power, you may have obstructions in the exhaust system ( like debri from a catalact converter. Other possible reasons are low compression or blown head gasket. GOOD LUCK

Make sure your electric cooling fan is coming on to help cool the radiator when the car's idling. Going down the highway there's plenty of air blowing over the radiator, and the gage probably goes down to mid-range. At idle on a real hot day, the radiator fan should cycle on and off at least and the gage should go toward mid-range when the fan's on.

Could be a water pump. I doubt it is a thermostat. Next time you are stopped at a light, when it starts getting hot, rev the engine up. If the temp starts dropping you most likely have a failing water pump on your hands.

Could be a busted heat pump. Get it looked at before you crack your engine block. Especially if you're leaking water from the the back of the engine. In that case call a tow truck before taking any more chances.

Are you running your air conditioner while the "overheating" is occuring. The heat from the air conditioner condenser can keep your fans from cooling off the radiator no matter how well they are working without to added airflow from your car being in motion.

if you have an electric fan - the sensor for it could be out, could be unplugged, motor died.
if you have a Manuel fan - the auto clutch could have broken.
