A mindmap is typically used in teaching vocabulary or trying to get students to associate ideas. So in the middle othe board or a piece of paper you write the word living room and circle it. You or the students then draw lines from living room adding new words which are associated with living room. The students will write things like sofa, tv or the like. It is a useful vocabulary technique.

A mind map is a way for someone to organize their ideas. There are many different styles of mind maps. They all look different, but serve the same purpose. It could be for students to record what they already know about something. Other times students may use them as they are learning in order to remember important things. They can also be used after something is taught for students to reflect on what they learned. One form of a mindmap is a KWL. The K is prior knowledge, the W is what you want to learn, and the L is what you did learn. It depends on the topic as to which form someone should use.
