There are lots of meanings for this most commonly used acronym on the internet. The most common meaning is "laugh out loud", but that's pretty obvious. "lol" is used many times when people can't think of something to say. I use it for two main reasons.
1. As a placeholder when I don't know what to respond with.
2. To represent when someone actually gets a smile out of me online. (I don't really laugh much when I'm alone on the computer)

That lol (laugh out loud or lots of love) thing is cute when it is used like once. I can't stand reading something that someone wrote using three letters for every word just to make it shorter or maybe because they can't read well so they are just sounding things out?
