You do not need to believe in God to believe there is a meaning of life. The two issues are separate. So your question is flawed. Although many atheists will say there is no purpose in life, many others will argue that there is a purpose. And by the way, people often think that existentialists don’t believe in a meaning of life, but once again people are confused. Many existentialists DO believe in spiritual meaning, but they will say that we must CREATE this meaning OURSELVES because to search for meaning beyond ourselves is absurd. But the main point I want to make is that one does not need to believe in God in order to believe in a meaning or purpose in life.

Purpose has little to do with being alive. What is the purpose of smelling a flower or enjoying a sunset? Life is an experience, not a job. And if there is a specific purpose to life, why would you think it has anything to do with the existance of a "god"?
What defines someone as an atheist is not an opinion about the purpose of life, but rather their belief (or non belief) in an intelligent power that has designed/created/controlled the universe. They think the universe exists because it just does. Nothing made it. Life exists as a by-product of the existance of the universe, and all the elements that interact within its vast span.
If you think it's impossible for the universe to exist, but not have been made, then consider your definition of "god". Most people accept that their god always existed and was never made. So if that unmade eternal quality of existance is possible for your god, then why couldn't it be possible for the universe?

But who ever told you we are here for no purpose? It's indignant what some holier-than-thou fundamentalists are willing to get to, to keep their lie going on! We can discuss faith or religions, but most certainly NOT on the basis of a bunch of miserable lies that are said in some ridiculous churches! A non-believer's life has a more REAL purpose than many a believer's life. We live for the joy of many things life has to offer us. And we live for the many things we can give others. Life is great, and it's full of beauty, very strong and moving emotions, excellent people, feelings, unbiased knowledge, and so on. We do NOT need a religion to lead a full life. Even more, the kind of people who told you that crap makes religions a much worse style of life, if it's based upon lies, that will make you waste your life in the hope for the uncertain utopy of a heaven, not taking the most of this only certain and real thing we all DO have.
I don't mean to attack all religions. I mean to attack those jerks who, on behalf of religions, will tell you any lie, so you hate and despise everybody who is not like you. If you won't give up your religion, you might want to consider changing your pastor or priest or whatever. They're telling you a miserable bunch of insulting lies. And that will perpetuate the long established hatred among different faiths, and those of us who can do without any faith at all.

Hey, don't fret about whether there is or isn't a God. No one's ever going to know for sure. Simply live your life in the best way you can.
Try to follow the "universal rules": Do unto others . . .; Love one another, etc.
It's the only way to have a decent life here on earth. Then, if there is an afterlife where the good are rewarded, well, that's the frosting on the cake.

"why on earth are we here?" can be read two ways:
1) what is our purpose? But people that don't believe we have a (divine) purpose would simply say that we have none.
2) how did we get here? this is explained pretty adequately by science.
I think mabe you should rethink the question, because it is either asking what is our purpose if we have no purpose, which is nonsense, or it is asking a technical question which would be better asked in the science sections.

Life is meaningless, to believe that there's a pre-ordained meaning to life or other cosmic purpose to have a distorted world view.
Is there a value to human existence? Why do you human beings exist? Is our existence, our life, nothing but a random event? Do cows have a value or a purpose in life. Why not?
Is our existence, our life, nothing but a random event, the leaf blowing in the wind, the ripple in the stream? If we suggest that there is a meaning or value superimposed on human life, what is the mysterious power that imbues our life with such a purpose or value? If this obscure power does exist, how does it manifest itself? If this obscure power does not manifest itself to humans in any objective form, it does not exist as far as humans are concerned. Therefore, it cannot convey a preordained or predestined value to our life.
Biology defines human beings as animals. Do other animals have a meaning or value attached to their life? If only human life has meaning, what is it that sets humans apart from other animals? The great apes are the first cousins of humans. Is there a value attached to their life Does a cow, a pig or a monkey have a value ascribed to its life, except to serve as food for humans?
In the perpetual struggle for survival, all living organisms are constantly engaged in a battle for limited resources. Lower life forms have little control over their inherently hostile environment. Only man has evolved rational thought processes. Among animals, only man can utilize his rational mind to achieve a higher degree of survival and security in an inherently insecure world.

WARNING: THE ALIENS MIGHT VISIT YOU TO ERASE YOUR MEMORY IF YOU READ THIS.
Well, you don't think the whole universe works the way Earth does, do you?
No! One species, one planet!
Most of the races of Earth are descended from alien races.
There is a planet of deer, a planet of Asians, and so on!
The Joozians put them all together on Earth in order to create drama from racial tension from their unnatural cohabitation of the planet and the whole universe tunes in to watch the fun!
Asians, bears, ducks, Jews, deer, and Hispanics, all trying to live side by side on one planet! It's great!
The purpose of our lives as humans is to entertain the life forms on other planets through the reality television show that they know as EARTH.
After 100 episodes, the only reason that the show was not cancelled, the planet of earth not demolished, the sun not turned off, and we are still alive is because I blackmailed the Joozians who produce the show with some dirty pictures that Kenny took of them while they were high on glach.
Now, look behind you.
This was revealed to me in
South Park, 100th episode, Season 7 - Episode 4 - Cancelled.

Life has what purpose you give it. My purpose in life is to make it meaningful by helping when I can, trying to be the best person I can, living a conscious life.
How can you live a truly moral life if you cede responsibility for your actions and purpose to another (god)?
We are here by chance, which is far more magnificent to me than through the machinations of some otherworldly being.

The only purpose is to live, even if you accomplish something great in your life, all that does is help you or others live a better life (not that thats a bad thing at all). But in the end, there is no individual purpose in your life except to reproduce and help your species continue on.

What's has the "purpose" of life got to do with atheism? Theism is life with a purpose formulated by humans to control other humans. You create your own purpose. Unless, of course, you like to have someone else give you your opinion. To answer your question, we exist to learn and to enjoy life. Pity that there are so many that can do neither.
