First motorcycle I ever rode was a 1932 Indian Scout and I was a solid fan ever since. What a bike, but I digress...

About 50 years ago Indian filed for bankruptcy and although taken over, a motorcycle was produced with the Indian logo until the late 50s when that logo was taken off the bikes. But, read on because Indian is not really dead...

Story

"In 2004, nearly 50 years after filing for bankruptcy, Stellican Limited, a London-based firm, acquired Indian Motorcycle, finally putting “America’s most iconic motorcycle brand” back on the map.

Since the purchase of Indian Motorcycles, the compnay has declared itself to be in a “Pre-Production Phase,” and hopes to finally unveil their production in late 2006. With goals to update machinery and design while retaining the integrity of the Indian legacy, we look forward to one of the most anticapted launches in motorcycle history."

Pretty much take all the info listed above, and blend it together. The original Indian Motorcycle company is long dead. There have been several attempts in the last 10 years or so to re-start the brand. At one time there were even compeating companys, both claiming to have the exclusive rights to Indian. After the legal battle ended, a new Indian was born, and produced a limited number of bikes in '03, and '04, this company is currently in restructuring. I have heard of plans of a buy out by another group hoping to start production again for '07 or '08.

1953 was when the original compay went under.
