No, having an index card is actually good. It shows that you care enough about what you are fighting for to make sure you do it efficiently. It would only be innapropriate if you had a big messy sheet of paper. I would simply ask to talk with them and explain all the ways in which you are beneficial to the business and why you deserve a raise. You could start out with something like, "I wanted to speak with you about my work here at "insert business name". You may have to do some negotiating and make some sacrifices on your part. I don't know if you could get any statisitcs on how you have affected the businesses succes, but if you could that would be great and they would know you actually put effort into this. Good Luck!

The talking points are a great idea. Remember that when asking for a raise to emphasize what you have contributed in the past 6 months and how you have helped the company either save money, become more efficient, or of any other contributions you may have made this year.

Just be cheery and let them know you are happy with the job but that you need to make more money b/c of all the prices (gas), etc going up these days. No 3X5 card! You need to be confident and prepared to present your presentation. Go from the heart and be honest.

It is perfectly reasonable to ask for a raise but you need to have good reasons for it. Just saying that it's not enough money isn't good enough. You need to show that you are doing an excellent job and have exceded their expectations for you job performance. When you were hired, did they tell you that you would advance? Try to memorize your talking points instead of reading from a card.

I would point out all the assets you bring to the company and how effectively you do your job. Point out every good thing you possibly can then say somehow that you feel since you have been going over and above your call of duty that you feel you deserve a pay rate increase. Good luck!

You shouldn't remind them that you want the raise, you need to prove to them that you deserve it.
make an outline of all the things you've done in the past few months that make you worthy of getting a raise.
You DO need to be tactful, but you can't be weak.

Talking points are a great idea. In fact, keep them civil and well written, and you can give them to them after the fact as a reminder of what you said (great evidence in court, if you ever need it).
