I have read about a claim that all humans are born as twins but, in most cases, at the very first stages of embryo development, the second baby vanishes, leaving a single foetus behind. However, I read about it in a book of fiction--the sort of book where the writer can fabricate all sorts of things freely.

you must have read wrong. b/c not everybody is born as a twin. that doesn't happen very often. but it happens very early in pregnancy. when a women gets an ultrasound very early in pregnancy and finds out that she's having twins. but later in the pregnancy when she is about 3 - 4 months along, they will give her another ultrasound and only find one baby. that is called vanishing twin syndrome, when the cells merge into one or the other one dies off and only one is left. there is such thing.

everybody being born as a twin is FALSE.

Yes, there is a such thing a vanishing twin syndrome. Not all pregnancies start out as twins though. I miscarried one of my twins at 6 weeks gestation. The only reason we knew it was twins was because of an early ultrasound to find out the reason for my bleeding. I had two babies in there but only one had a heartbeat. My body absorbed and expelled the other embryo. That is why it is called the vanishing twin syndrom.

Yes, there is such a thing, but *no* it is not true that all or even most pregnancies start out as twins. Some scientists believe that up to 10% of pregnancies start out as twin conceptions, but that about 90% of those develop into vanishing twin syndrome.

Well there is such a thing, but not every human starts out as a twin. Sometimes one twin will miscarry and the mother's body (or sometimes the other fetus's body) will absorb it.
