Very simple really, Superman is from another planet. The physics of this planet do not affect him as they affect us. He only runs into trouble when he encounters elements from his own planet, Krypton. Thus explains his distress when he is subjected to Kryptonite - a mineral from his home planet. Besides that, he is a SUPER HERO. What good would a superhero be if he wasn't SUPER?

The same thing that keeps bullets from puncturing him. He's SUPERMAN!!! That's the whole point, the only thing that hurts him is Kryptonite and losing Louise Lane.

His super strength allows his "super" lungs to hold his breath for weeks or more. And his "super" endurability keeps him from geeting the air ripped out of him.

I've actually thought of that. Maybe he doesn't ever breathe--there's no evidence in the show that he breathes even when on earth.
