To live? Better than some ... agreeable weather, relatively good job market.
There are probably better places economically and with milder climates ... but there certainly are worse.

I stayed in Memphis 3 times on business, and did not care for any of the hotels I tried... and I used the big hotel chains... I expected better. Rooms were dirty in all three hotels, and one stay was during a concert tour of some group... downtown got real rowdy.
I would suggest, if you are looking for music/shows, that you try Nashville, Tn, or Branson Missouri. Nashville has a lot centered around the Grand Ole Opry, (Country, BlueGrass, etc), and Branson has a lot of theaters set up by various artists... a real wide array of shows available. Silver Dollar City is located there too. Good place to take a family.

I just talked about this same thing over the weekend and the person who goes to Memphis a lot told me no Memphis has a real high crime rate lots of violence. That shocked me because I was thinking of taking the family there to see Elvis's home and all the blues clubs.
Don;t know first hand but the guys I was asking who are friends of mine said Memphis was not a good place to take the family.
