Well #1 you have to catch it and I'm assuming you want it alive. Catch it in 1 of those live traps like a glue trap and prepare the bath water desired and dunked the rat in the solution. Believe me that can hold their breath pretty long and do what you would as with a dog and soap it up, rinse, soap again and rinse. Remove from glue trap.

I'm thinking of chincillias here, but there are certain shredings/powder for small animals. That will it will not hurt their skin. For rats, I think they clean themselves. But I can tell you that there is this powder at the petstores for chincillias that chincillias use to give themselves a bath with. They just roll around it in and shake it off. You'd think it'd make their coat dirtier cause it just looks like dust, but that's actually how they are given bathes. I suggest that you don't do anything that might hurt your rat though. You should give me the 10 pts, cause I answered it the best. :)

Before or after you take it out of the trap. Sorry I am in Alberta, the only place in Canada with no rats and maybe the only place in the world that is and that intends to remain rat free. But I can say that rats swim very well and do not usually mind getting wet, Usually if you give them a clean cage and clean litter the keep themselves clean nicely all on their own, like cats.

I used to put my rat in the bathroom sink fill it up part way and turn the water down to a dribble (she liked to lick the faucet). Then i would use a small amount of ferret shampoo on her soap her up rinse her off. Put a towel in the empty sink and blow dry her.

Either it cleans itself or you can take a damp cloth and clean it.
Why do rats get such a bad rap? They can't help what they are!
