they used to have nose plugs for this, they squeezed your nose together to keep the water out and were on a band that hung around your neck like a necklace.

THey probably still have them.

I'm not sure why you don't want to wear a nose clip, because it would instantly solve your problem. However, failing that, you can exhale VERY GENTLY while you are under water. You don't have to breathe out hard -- if you do, you'll run out of air very quickly, but just a very gentle pressure will keep the water out of your nose, unless you are doing synchronized or stunt swimming and have to flip upside down in the water. To do that, you have to wear a nose clip, and if you watch the synchro swim teams, you'll see that they do were them.
Guys wear them too, by the way.

Whenever your face goes under the water, you must breathe out through your nose. If you are blowing out, the water can't go in!

Another suggestion... RELAX! I know it is hard when you are scared, but it will be much easier if you are relaxed.
Practice where you can sit or stand in the water. Slowly lower your face into the water. Start blowing out just before your face goes in. When you are just about out of air, lift your face out again. Get yourself used to doing this before trying to swim.

Well without wearing a nose guard..the only real ways to stop the water are by using your fingers or blowing out through your nose as you enter the water.

As childish as it sounds, blow bubbles out your nose. I teach swim lessons and the kids get so excited to see how simple it is to keep the water out.

That happens to me alot before I learned how to swim. I was afriad to go under because I couldn't see anything, so I wore googles and it helped it. Ummm swim in the shallow end so if any happens you can just stand up.
