Go to start menu, then click on settings, then go to your control panel. There is a icon called Security. Click on it and there should be an option to turn the Automatic Updates off for automatically updating. You can set it to only update when you agree to it.

You might need to restart your computer for it to actually get set correctly.

goto control panel and switch to clasic view if not already, you will find a link in the left corner to do so.
open the security center
under "Manage security Settings for;" select automatic updates
in the automatic updates dialog box select "Turn off automatic updates".
click apply and then ok.
but be sure that if u have SP2 then u will always get a warning that automatic updates are shut down
