The world has about 6.5 billion people, of which only about 66% have a television. That leaves about 4 billion people. With China having about 1.3 billion people do we really think they will wake up at 3 am to watch a FIFA where their country is not participating? North American ratings show not alot of people are watching.
I might be able to say 750 million to 1 billion...but 2-3 billion, i think not!

****I understand people can watch the games on big screens or bars etc. but those individuals are not the demographic who do not own a TV. Its the parts of the world that do not have stable electricity, and care more about their next meal then a worldcup. Everyone flaunts the perception that Americans only think about America but sorry all you soccer fans you are falling into the same role, b/c not EVERYONE likes soccer/football.
Please respond again, explain the 1.3 billion chinese who will have to wake at 3am to watch the game (sorry the games not that popular). Please explain india where Cricket is the number 1 sport not soccer, explain their billion citizens and if they will be watching. South America only has about 300 million people, i'll give you those people...still not 2 billion viewers.

Yes. Just because not everyone has a TV set doesn't mean they won't watch it. You can go to bars or other places to watch games -- which a lot of people. I've been down in Brazil during a world cup and can tell you that 95% of the population is watching the game somehow. Believe it or not, almost everyone in the ghetto had at least a small tv.
I'd say with Central and South America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and a good portion of the US, you probably have close to 2 billion people watching games (on the internet or tv).
After taking a second, more empirical look at this, I crunched some numbers and came up with a little under 1.8 billion. This total included the populations of all the countries participating in the WC, and a very modest and trimmed assumption of immediate surrounding countries which may bear some interest. One caveat to this was the United States, where I assumed at most only 20% of the population would have even taken a look at one of the games. China, India, and most African countries were completely excluded. The number 2 billion is likely a slight rounding up from 1.8 from the TV networks.

Yes 2 Million is actually probably under, Since 90% of the world the #1 sport is Soccer.
if you are from a country that people r fanatics about it like Europe and South America you bet that if your Country is in the final game that Country will come to a stand still that day.
For people that due not understand the game its not fun however for Most of the World that does its great.
Europeans and South Americans take Soccer as seriously as their jobs specially the men.

Yes, football is the most popular game in a lot places around the world. It is a game that is in the blood of Africans, Europeans and South Americans. Those who don't have TVs go to watch at a friend's or at a sports club and those who do have a TV don't mind inviting people over to watch with them (best way to watch the games!!). There are ways to watch or at least follow the matches on the radio. I do believe a lot of people are watching.

where do you live? are you an american? if you are I understand your skepticism. In the rest of the world, football is a religion! During the World Cup, people lucky enough to own a TV open up their homes to virtual strangers with whom they only have a common love for the game. Football matches are broadcast not on cable but on the national state owned tv stations. ALL the matches, mind you! People fail to go to work, and their employers understand. Big electronic companies like Sony set up big screens on the streets and large crowds gather to watch!
In the more important matches, traffic comes to a standstill!
I personally will not let ANTYHING prevent me from watching the final!!

dont think so. think about it, 2 billion, thats like 2 out of six ppl watching the game on planet earth, thats crazy!
because first of all, not everyone like soccer, then not everyone has tv, consider thoes ppl in thirdworld country, not all of them have tvs and they pretty much take up more than 60%of the world population. so 2 billion is not possible. 1 billion maybe or prpbably

I think that is a definite possibility. The world cup only comes around 4 years involving country's from all over the world, intriguing many people all over the world to want to watch it. As for me if the team I'm rooting for doesn't make it, I would not get up to see the final game.

Have you ever heard of giant televisions? Have you gone to Las Vegas lately? How's this: The Staples Stadium was at full seating capacity when South Korea played last time. Thanks to all the South Koreans living in L.A. They actually rented the place so they can watch their soccer team!

Why not, if you don't own a TV. you find some one that does, in many countries they watch the games in clubs, bars etc. Soccer is multiculturalism. Best way to fight out the stress, No to wars, peace out!
