I am very strong in my beliefs that abortion is wrong---no matter what!!! So I challenge anyone to try to convince me otherwise. Please tell me why you have strong beliefs for or against abortion.

This whole "That's your belief and that's fine but you have no right to force your beliefs on someone else" is such a crock.

It's as if we're talking about whether it's ok to step on ants or not. The belief that abortion is ok forces that opinion on the unborn child with the ultimate finality, doesn't it? I mean it effectively destroys their life so that the mother can go on with hers. Why?

Because everyone makes mistakes...
So it's acceptable to make someone else pay for
your mistake.

Because sometimes the woman is a victim of a violent
crime. Should she have to carry the constant reminder
of the crime with her?
Again, we are making someone else pay for the
crime but I can have compassion on the woman
and understand this argument.

Because the baby is diseased:
First of all, medicine is not 100 % accurate. If it
were we wouldn't have malpractice suits. My
wife was advised to abort her son because the
doctors said that he would be born retarded due to
all of the medications she was on. He is a healthy
normal, productive 21 year old man of whom I am
quite proud. Doctor's are not gods. They don't
know they are only guessing. But hey, let's make
the baby pay for the doctor's mistake, right?

But let's assume the doctor is right. Now we're
talking about quality of life. How arrogant people
are to think that they are smart enough to decide
that "this life is worth something but not this other
one because 'I' think it's defective." Ok then, let's
round up all of those with Dowsn syndrome and
just put them out of their misery... or is it ours?
Then, right after them we'll round up all of the old
and infirmed and get rid of them too because they
don't really serve any real purpose. Let's start
with Steve Hawkings the astrophycisist....
his life was pretty worthless.

"But don't shoot me or take my life because I'm
worth something." Quality of life??? Please.
Someone saying, "In my opinion no one could
convince me that living a life crippled and in
pain is not better than no life at all" is all well and
good except he/she isn't talking about their life,
are they? Their forcing their opinon on someone
else.

The child will grow up unwanted, unloved and will live a
horrible life:
See above arrogance... Now, not only do we
know what is the best quality of life we can also
predict the future!!!! Yeah!!!!! I wonder what
Abraham Maslow would have said about that.
(If you don't know who he is google him - and
know that he was born unwated, unloved and
abused.)

"But... don't force your opinions on me... Just sit idly by while we kill millions of babies who's only crime was being conceived by someone who were more concerned about their own needs."

I'll stop forcing my opinions on you when you stop forcing your opinions on those who are the most helpless and unable to defend themselves.

Once again Facist Right Wing Christian biggots want to define sin and get the power to stop everyone from doing what they have determined as sin. They did this during the Inquisition and almost anything could get you tortured, burned and beheaded ( yes, it's not only the Muslim way, it was perfected by Christians)
The real question is do you have the right to Sin?
And what is a Sin?
There is absolutely no proof that a thing called a soul really exists physically, in fact all the proofs point to the reasoned denial of this physically never seen object. I remember when they claimed to have weighed a dead body and found it lighter... only to find out later from scientists that
the air in the body has volume and does weight the exact amount they claimed as the soul. Since it does not exist or exists in a temporial or spiritual state, it cannot be destroyed physically. So there is no factual evidence to support such jibberish.
Second, we have the right to sin. Judgement is mine sayeth the Lord! Not Jerry Faldwell, Not Bennie Hin, and Not Pat Roberts. God does not need and has never asked for their help. If he has a plan, then leave him alone, he knows what he's doing without your self righteous interferance. Blowing up hospitals, killing doctors? Trying to ease your fellow man's path to heaven is what Christians have been using as their war cry for thousands of years. The right to sin belongs to each individual, that is the teaching of God and should be the law of the land. Oh,
I forgot....it is! The Christian Right only wants laws for the maids and gardeners enforced, not laws they don't like.
Jesus said "Go and Sin no more" not " I'll stop you from ever sinning" Maybe he puts the soul in at the moment of birth. Nobody knows, so don't pretend to have knowledge you don't have. Laws against abortion don't work anyway, they just cause tragedy. Do you think Bush's girls or Paris Hilton would not fly to Paris or Canada to have their abortion if they wanted one? So you see your only hurting the poor. They would go back to back alley abortions which is why it was legalized in the first place. Another dumb Christian Right control freak rule that won't be followed anyway. Prohibition didn't work either.
And Dancing and singing and of course Rock and Roll, are all of the Devil... we need laws stopping that to! And Sex we all know that that is Satans tool..... IDIOTS

I don't think abortion should be a form of birth control but what about women who get pregnant from being raped? What if the child has some sort of disability that could cause him or her to suffer for their entire lives and it is detected in time to perform the abortion? Would you want your child to have to suffer their entire life because you had some selfish thought that getting an abortion would affect how people looked at YOU? How do you tell your child "you are the product of a violent rape... every time I look at you I think of what happened." Do you have any idea what that could do to the child? I think the child should be considered when deciding whether or not abortion is "ethical"... If a teenager gets pregnant because she was stupid or drunk, no, abortion should not be performed... the child could be put up for adoption or raised by family until she is able to take care of it... But it should not be illegal... just monitored.

I think abortion is a personal decision. I personally don't believe in it and would never do it. But again it depends on the circumstance surrounding it. In the case of rape you should have the right to terminate the pregnancy in a morning after type pill. If the woman would die if she went ahead with the pregnancy. If the fetus is looking forward to multiple complication and most likely wouldn't survive the birth or life with out pain after. I basically believe like you, however I can not force my beliefs on others. You have the right to make that choice and you will also be the one to live with it for the rest of your life and yes you will at the end of your life deal with all the issue of a lifetime and live with those decisions and consequences.

I would never tell you that your beliefs are wrong. After all, they are your beliefs. But...if you happen to be one of those Pro-Life people that uses various ways to make other Pro-Choice people feel bad about their decision, that's what I have a problem with. I am Pro-Choice. It is my own personal decision and I don't believe that there is one way for every woman to deal with an unexpected pregnancy. Would you rather have a baby grow up poor, or abused, or unwanted and neglected than never born at all. Not everybodys' situation is the same. There are girls that have money and support that a pregnancy would be much easier on. But not everybody. Leave the decision up to the person that is going to be dealing with all the issues that come with having a baby. Let them decide if they can handle it or not. Unless of course you are going to be providing free daycare, food, clothing, schooling, ect. for every woman that is unprepared to have a baby, but goes through with it anyways because YOU think its wrong.

Yours is really a question of believing in the absolute sanctity of life, regardless of the quality of that life. The best way I can illustrate the weakness of your argument is to imagine a sci-fi scenario: imagine the world has become a toxic, radioactive hellhole nightmare. People must eat the most disgusting, putrid food. They are deformed, and in constant pain from radiation exposure. They are living a nightmare.

Is life worth it under these conditions?

While the entire situation I've posited is not based in reality, each scenario exists for unwanted children. Why should an African child be born when he's already condemned to starvation? Why should a child in Thailand grow up in misery, having been born with the AIDS virus transmitted from his prostitute mother?

If a baby is going to born with grotesque physical defects, why put them through that hell?

I will never believe that a life of misery is better than no life at all.

michellaneou -
that is such a hot-button issue and your statement is solid proof why the government (local, state AND federal) need to STAY OUT of this issue.

Abortion, regardless of one's PERSONAL beliefs, is something to be decided upon only by the expectant mother and God (or whatever supreme being, conscience, inner voice, etc.).

You are free to believe as you wish.
I am free to do the same.
For now, our government hasn't taken away those rights.
But pray that it doesn't take away the right for a woman to choose to abort.
Again - that is NONE of your business or mine.

While I advocate life as a first choice, there are times when abortion IS the life choice.

You are probably a young girl with wide-eyed illusions as to how the world should be.
In time, you will experience that the world isn't simply black-and-white and that there are those shades of grey that make it difficult to decide the right path.
Let your illusions last, much like your youth.
Both are fleeting and what is left are the realities of daily living.
I hope you'll be able to cope when you mature.

That's the crux of the issue, isn't it? You may be against abortion, and that is fine with me. But when you try to force your beliefs on women who might not share your feelings is when you have crossed the line.

And believe it or not, even women who DO get abortions rarely consider it to be an easy thing. Who exactly are YOU to tell another woman when and how she must have children? Are you going to pay for their health care and education? Would you want to grow up unwanted?

Just to add a few points: Before Roe vs. Wade, the #1 cause of pregnancy-related deaths was illegal abortion (now it's domestic violence, but that's another topic). As someone else mentioned, it will always exist. If it becomes illegal again, this problem will return.

Another thing to remember is that I don't know anybody that's "pro-abortion." Nobody's "pro-abortion," just "pro-choice." Every pro-choice person I've ever talked to would much rather see a pregnancy prevented than terminated. Unfortunately, as long as women are seen as sex objects in this society, and we are too afraid to teach our kids about birth control, unwanted pregnancies are going to happen. You want to prevent abortion? Work to educate people about preventing unwanted pregnancies.

The problem with this issue lies with the way that you have presented this question. "Please tell me why you have strong beliefs for or against abortion."

So your question says there are two sides: those who think abortions are wrong and those who think they are right. Pro LIfe or Anti LIfe. I see it differently. I see it as Pro Choice and Anti Choice.

I don't think abortion is right but it might be the right choice. I also don't believe that it is up to me to make other peoples choices for them. I don't believe abortions should be banned b/c it is not my body, it is not my choice. It is yours, it is hers.

I don't think it's right that people in this country are obese and eat themselves to death gorging on the Golden Arches and sugar. But it's their choice to eat that way. Their choices lead to death too. Their own death and their children's deaths. CHildhood obesity kills thousands of children. So should we ban fast food, junk food, and pop?

Abortion is a personal decision based on personal experience. If you were raped would you carry to term? If you were 15? If the fetus had not developed correctly and would be still born? or live for only a few hours after birth?

I can't answer those questions for you. I think it's fine if you answer yes to all those questions. It's YOUR choice. I have no issues with your believe that abortion is wrong.

Do you also believe that access to abortions for everyone should be denied? That's a position I have an issue with. Why should your believes supercede someone elses choice?

Banning abortion won't stop abortion either. It just makes it more dangerous and leads to more death as woman and girls who are scared and alone take desperate measures seeking out back alley "doctors" and treatments.

So to answer your question in short I don't believe that abortion is right but I think that choice is.

Honestly, I'm neutral. I have strong beliefs for both sides. Abortion can be the best thing for the parent, and the child.

If the parent aborts, she'll have a chance to finish school (If she still is in school, most likely). If you have a child, and you have low education, you won't be able 2 support your baby, and let's face it, they're expensive. And if you can't support them, a lot of the child's needs will be neglected. Like food, clothing, hygeine, shelter. It can scar them both physically and emotionally.
