why do people get married?

This is probably the MOST INTELLIGENT question I have ever seen on Yahoo. Good for you. Not only that, why do people get married who have so many problems in their relationships. It is amazing to me to see how many people think that marriage and kids is going to MAGICALLY FIX THINGS!!! It's just unreal to me.

It is outdated. The fact is that a huge percentage of couples cheat, lie, betray and do all sorts of things to their spouses. Marriage clearly does not prevent those issues from happening so why do we offer so many incentives towards it? It's so hypocritical. "Here is a marriage license now you can get all kinds of tax breaks and health insurance breaks". Continue to cheat, lie, betray and do whatever though, it's okay". And for the people in commited relationships who honor each other, oh, sorry".

totally crazy. I've been with my partner for over 5 years and I couldn't be more commited. Marriage wouldn't signify anything different other than being on his insurance and getting tax breaks.

because they think it proves some thing of there love and they want to share there specil day with family friends to share there love in this world most people dont think of marriage as much now just a piece of paper that binds u together yrs a go it was different people got married and stayed together for yrs as it was a disgrace to the family if u got divorced or got pregnant out of wedlock so many people worked really hard at keeping there marriage together to save disgracing the family name
but nowadays many people have children out of wedlock and only see marriage as a a piece of paper and many people still cheat / have affairs and things that shouldnt be done while married ( didnt really happen yrs ago or never really heard of it ) so if people cheat and do stuff while they are married surely it means they can do it any way so is it really worth getting married for that piece of paper ?

I think you need to grow up. This is how you can ultimately show your love for someone. This world has come to apoint that people take advantage of the fact that divorce is easy. Kids need a married mother and father. Thats not to say that they cant survive otherwise, but most times they lack something in their lives if they dont have both.

Because they have the guts to commit themselves to their partner in front of their friends and family. Because they have faith in themselves and their love to be with each other for the rest of their love.

Just because some people dont understand its meaning and abuse what it stands for doesnt mean that marriage itself is wrong. For all those people who so happily live together cos they are too scared to get married, do they really think that cheating and lying is way lesser in such a relationship?

No Way!!! It is important to get married. It is a sin to live together. It is a sin to have sex out of marriage. If you have kids out of marriage you will never legally be a family. Because the law says that you must be married to be a family.

Health Insurance! Usually it's cheaper to get on as a spouse, or if one person's job has better health insurance. That's why people in America get married!!
