Ancestral law in ancient Sparta mandated same-sex relationships with youths who were coming of age for all adult men, so long as the men eventually took wives and produced children. The Spartans thought that love and erotic relationships between experienced and novice soldiers would solidify combat loyalty and encourage heroic tactics as men vied to impress their lovers. Once the younger soldiers reached maturity, the relationship was supposed to become non-sexual, but it is not clear how strictly this was followed. There was some stigma attached to young men who continued their relationships with their mentors into adulthood.

I remember reading about this in college. It's interesting to show how hetero and homosexuality changes with each culture and age. It just goes to show you how wrong it is to say that homosexuality is a mental illness, as the military still defines it to this day. Sexuality lays on a spectrum with hetero and one end and homo at the other. Most people are neither completely one nor the other, but lay somewhere in the middle. How we deal with this fact of human nature is determined by the social contract. Some societies sanction it, some make it illegal, either way the human condition remains the same.

Although growing up in the US today makes us feel that this relationship is disturbing to say the least, there will be a time when future societies look upon our laws and say, "What the F*!@k"

:D

Although the ancient Greeks left behind writings that give us an idea of what their society was like but it's hard to know how the average person felt. The Spartans developed a society based on slavery where slaves outnumbered free citizens two to one. Deformed children were thrown off a cliff, and boys were prepared for war service not long after they could walk. With this strange society it's hard to believe that the people cared much about sexual practices.

They were not burdened with the hangups that modern people have.

The concept of the male sexual bonding enhancing their abilities was quite common throughout the ancient world. Many societies were largely male/female segregated and sexual development among young men was generally homosexual first.

The concept that male/male and female/female sexuality is unnatural and wrong is a modernist convention which first actually took hold during the reformation.

Prior to that it wasn't considered a major issue.

Pity times aren't still like that today

Many idolatrous cultures worshipped whatever brought them pleasure so this is no surprise that in the Greek culture of pedestry, today we would call pedaphilia or child molestation, there were many justifications of promiscuity. They worshipped the athletic human physic and all forms of pleasure so their philosophy matched what they practiced.

Consider the Samuri in Japan practiced pedastry also

It was very common on old times. Even Peter wrote the Corinthians telling them about the forbidden fruit.
And of course the Catholic Church try to impose moral, even they were raping the orphans, and torturing women during the inquisition with an instrument called pear that destroy the vagina why?
Double standards of the church.

i think the modern armed forces of the world should re-adopt this practice. it's like taking an oath: 'i cover you back, you cover mine.' or was that a gay porn title?...hhhmmm...anyhoo, nothing would compare to the intense love felt between two male soldiers in the midst of war and death. there's nothing more romantic and noble (compared to the man leaving the wench to go off to war scenario crap you see on tv nowadays).

but then again, if the world's militaries turned gay, then we won't have wars---we'll have fashion shows and catfights and lots of parades of big guns! how fabulous!

It doens't make me for or against the culture, especially as it has no affect on me. I could be a smart a$$ and say, "well, they aren't exactly the ruling culture, now are they?"
