Although on some superspeedways, the shifter is essentially ignored except for pit stops.

The direct drive of a standard transmission has always been preferred in any sort of track racing except for the drag racers. Aside from the road courses, as far as I know, Pocono is the only track where they shift at all while under racing conditions. I know some short track and dirt track cars use automatics, but this is primarily for reason of economics and preferred gear ratios.

none...authomatic transmissions are for loser....if i could afford a 5 spd or even a 6 spd i wouldnt b driving an automatic

Execpt for drag racing most racing cars ( cart,irl,F1, NASCAR, Sprints. ETC) use a manual or semi auto transmisson(electronic, paddle shift,etc.).

are you serious?? uhmm do you now had funny it would be to watch them drop to green in an automatic??
riiight.
okay, now with that being said there are some tracks they hang off of the shifting, and there are some races where they can run in close to one gear..
