These Barn Swallows keep flying at my head - full speed - and then turn at the last second when they are about a foot away. It's quite scary. Is this normal? What should I do?

my dog chases swallows every day (when in season)

they seem to enjoy making erratic flight paths and abrupt turns presumably in search of bugs. They will circle me and the dog and fly so close - I almost think they are playing with us.. so yes, it's normal

Usually it is due to being near a nest where chicks are present but can be due to some smells such as smoke (cigarette).

They have been known to also try to scare one away during mating season as a show of bravery to a possible mate.

yes it is normal. They have a nest near by and are trying to prevent you from getting any closer.
Or they maybe building a nest and want you to stay away

There is a nest close by and they think you are a danger to their chicks.

They may have babies and are protecting them if you are too close to the nest.
