PC or Mac?
There are tons of inexpensive (and good) PC laptops.
But once you add on all the stuff, including wifi cards, you're close to spending the same as you would for a Macintosh.
I've got a 15" iBook, a 17" Powerbook and my wife uses a 12" iBook.
We love them.
I'm not that familiar with the newer MacBook and MacBook Pro, but I understand that they come with wifi pre-installed.
I would also recommend getting a "SuperDrive", which can record BOTH DVD's and CD's.
If you are a student, you get an extra discount.

Let me tell you my nightmare! I went to Dell and to Cingular because I wanted to use my laptop with internet anywhere. They both agreed on what I should buy. After I bought it, they both disagreed and stuck me with the return charges. SO, my point is, if you are going to just use the laptop a Dell is great but you have GOT to do your homework first and call Dell's technical support BEFORE you buy and discuss with them internet connection options. I would even three way with your wireless carrier also.

Not a lot to go on as all laptops sold today have wireless. Check out ebay if you want it cheap.

Acer is going aggressive with their Apire lineup, just be careful about the weight though, they're not as light as the Travelmates, but hey, they pack a mean punch for the price they're in.
Alternatively, check out the high end market for all the nice toys: Toshiba, Fujitsu-Siemens, Sony, IBM, HP... just be ready to shovel out on the high prive tags...

I use a Toshiba Equium. My husband bought it for me. He thinks I'm an amateur, but this is the dogs doo dahs. Even he's impressed with the speed and capacity. It's not too pricey in the scheme of things and is a looker too, if that matters...
The screen is super. Overall I'm well impressed. (in my own right).

My girlfriend is a nanny, and a casual computer user. She likes her iBook. I'm a software engineer, and like my PowerBook. I would soon like to own a MacBook Pro, so my suggestion would be to look into MacBooks and MacBook Pros.
