I would say Brian Friel... His 'Translations' and 'Dancing at Lughnasa' are paricularly notable. He's topical and erudite, and at 77 is still producing great things. Check out http://www.irishplayography.com or google Field Day Theatre

I'd go with Martin McDonough, too, even though he mostly lived in England when he was starting to write. For the most enduring who's still alive, I'd agree with Brian Friel.
