We will be going to the nascar race in Chicago in a few weeks and would like tips on what to do and what to make sure we see. We have pit passes and we will be there for the whole race weekend. This is the first race for the entire family. Tips on what to pack would also be helpful. Thanks! :D

Get there early, and bring food/beer/water. Beverages and food at the track are expensive ($6 for a beer or burger). Sunscreen and earplugs are good. Wear sneakers or some comfortable shoes, you'll be doing A LOT of walking. If your gonna buy any souvenir or merchandise at the track, prepare to pay a lot. I suggest renting a Nextel FanView for the weekend, those things are great. It's sometimes hard to know what's going on at the track since you can't see everything and whatnot, the FanViews make up for that. If your going down to the pits, you can't have open toed shoes, shorts, or sleeveless shirts. I don't know about Chicagoland, but many tracks are hard to get out of afterwards, either get to your car quick to beat the traffic or be prepared to spend sometime getting out of there (I spent 5 hours in the parking lot at Phoenix a couple of years back). And most importantly, HAVE FUN!!

Get there early. On race day, the pits close early. Pack a lot of water and sunscreen. 3 years ago I missed about 1/2 the race at Michigan because of heat exhaustion.

Pit passes allow you to walk up and down pit road and be present when they wheel the cars out onto the starting grid. that's it. You need a "Hot" pass or a "Garage" pass to get back into the garage area. Those passes are tough to come by for the average person, unless you know someone.

Pack:

A seat cushion, ear plugs, and a cooler full of food and water/beer/whatever.

I've never had pit passes before, but it's of most impotance to be sitting in a seat high enough so that you can see the entire track. If you're too low, you'll only see the cars as they are passing you.

Don't bring umbrellas, backpacks with stuff. Security is tight. Most will let you bring in a "soft 6 pack" cooler though. NOT the hard ones.Cameras are OK and you'll have a blast! have fun and don't forget your sun block and sunglasses!

You'll have a great time so long as Jeff Gordon gets another DNF.
