Those are actually in-ear monitors. They typically get a mix of sound that's tailored just for the singer -- with the vocals higher in the mix so that they can more easily hear themselves and then sing on key. They can also provide physical isolation from the PA system, so that the singer's hearing is protected from the volume being pumped out to the house.

In some major arenas, the microphones and speakers will blast the sound from the speakers. The sound sometimes (especially in arenas) will bounce off of the walls and ceiling right back at them and make it difficult to hear. They can hear better with the ear plug in.

They're called "monitors" and they enable the singer to hear the music, backup singers, etc. better. What you hear in the audience may be different from what the singer hears in their monitors.

They are feed back monitors. When you are in front of a thousand screaming fans stand up monitors dont work. The ear pieces allow them to hear their own voice and the voice of their fellow singers.

It helps drown out the back ground noise so they can hear themselves better and make sure they are on tone, ect. That's why the background singers don't need them.

some do it so they can hear themselves. it has always been a common practice amongst singers. especially the ones who sing bass. they use to place one hand over their ear and they could see how deep they were getting.
i used to laugh at my grandpa in church cause i thought he always caught an earache while everyone was singing. we wouldn't sing just provided the bass with his voice.

Those "ear plugs" are headphones that have the music in them. This helps to drown out the yelling so they can be on pitch during their performance. Good quesiton.

So they can hear themselves. Back in the day they had speakers aimed at themselves, now they use earplugs.

by plugging your ears, you're able to tune out the other instruments. This helps protect your hearing and makes it easier to hear yourself, which makes you better able to tell if you're on kay and tempo.
