I have a HP dv1000 and high speed cabel with a linksys srs 200 router. My girlfriends computer is a very old HP with the hard drive full and it pulls up pages faster than mine. I have registry fix and have tried every thing to speed it up. I have almost 42% left on my hard drive and have already increased virtual memory. If any one has had similar problems please help.

In today's network environment and when faced with unexplainable events on the computer, my first question is almost always, "Have you checked for Spyware/Malware/Adware?" There is also potential for some virus damage in these circumstances. You mentioned that you have checked, but you might want to try scanning with more than one Anti-Spyware application. They each have their own strengths and weaknesses.

Everyone who maintains a high-speed Internet connection these days is foolish if they do not have running a good antivirus, and some type of Malware protection. I would also recommend that you should ensure you have complete all critical updates required of your OS. My computer has been up and online for over two years (save for a few power failures), and to this day runs fairly smooth and without any significant infections of any sort.

Some Free Tools (if you are adverse to spending money on this):

Antivirus http://www.avast.com, or http://www.grisoft.com
AntiSpyware http://www.spybot.info or, http://www.lavasoftusa.com

Free tools can help, but if you are a power user, or if you participate in any "Gray Area" activities, I would strongly suggest that you actually BUY a good Internet Security Suite. My recommendation is TrenMicro's PC-Cillin Internet Secrity Suite (http://www.trendmicro.com).

Mostly, in todays network world, too many of us do not spend enough time on maintenance for our computers. Depending on the amount of time you spend on it, you should be doing something almost daily to keep your computer healthy. Virus checks, spyware sweeps, and OS/Application updates are a good start. Safe browsing, messaging, and file sharing is a whole other topic. Be careful your habits are not affecting your computers performance.

I hope this helps ....

One thing I don't see, how much ram is installed? If it's less that 512MB, that's half the problem.

What processer is in the notebook? If it's a Celeron...oh well...

How many files are loading at start up? Are ALL of the necessary? Look at the Task Manager Processes and determine which may not be needed. Then there are "start-up" software programs that can toggle these on or off. Be careful not to disable something you need.

Oh and increasing virtual memory is not necessarily a good thing. This means the RAM is swapping pages back and forth to the hard disk and this process is SLOOOOOW compared to the speed of RAM. Buy more ram, go to 512MB or 768, that's about where the benefits end.

Also, have you scanned for viruses or spyware? These can collectively bring your PC to a grinding halt.

And what OS is your girlfriends computer running? I assume you're on XP? her's may be W2000 or even ME which act differently.

Good luck

It's because sometimes laptops have to still load up and if you use the same Computer cords then one of the computers will go faster. Start letting your computer load for 10 minutes.

your laptop needs at leeeeast 512 mb of ram to run windows xp at a reasonable speed. If you have that amount or more, run a scan for viruses or spyware.
